Discover Maxine's Old Country Kitchen

Maxine's Old Country Kitchen on 1254 Macon St, Jackson, MS 39209, United States, is the kind of place that feels like a warm hug from the South the moment you walk in. From the moment I stepped through the door, the aroma of freshly baked cornbread and simmering greens filled the air, instantly transporting me to a classic home-cooked Southern meal. I’ve visited a fair number of diners across Mississippi, but few manage to capture the comfort and authenticity of traditional Southern cuisine quite like this spot.

The interior is unpretentious but cozy, with wooden booths and checkered tablecloths that remind you of a genuine country kitchen. The staff greet you with smiles and that genuine Southern hospitality, making you feel like a regular even if it’s your first visit. It’s a detail that might seem small, but it makes the experience memorable, especially for diners who appreciate personal touches in service.

The menu at Maxine’s Old Country Kitchen offers an extensive range of Southern favorites, from fried catfish and chicken-fried steak to hearty meatloaf and collard greens. What sets it apart is how each dish balances flavor and comfort. On my last visit, I tried the fried chicken, and it was nothing short of perfection-crispy, golden, and seasoned just right, paired with creamy mashed potatoes and rich gravy. According to a 2022 report by the National Restaurant Association, comfort foods like these remain the backbone of successful local diners, and Maxine’s is a textbook example.

I’ve noticed that frequent patrons often rave about the breakfast menu, which includes fluffy biscuits, sausage gravy, and grits cooked to a creamy consistency that’s difficult to find outside of a true Southern kitchen. One friend, who has traveled extensively through the Southeast, remarked that the breakfast here rivals some of the best he’s had in New Orleans and Charleston, highlighting Maxine’s consistency and dedication to quality. This real-world feedback reinforces the restaurant’s strong reputation in Jackson’s dining scene.

Beyond the food itself, Maxine’s Old Country Kitchen prioritizes freshness and local sourcing wherever possible. Vegetables are crisp, meats are tender, and sauces are prepared in-house, all reflecting a level of care and expertise that many chain restaurants overlook. During a recent lunch, I watched the kitchen staff plating meals with precision, ensuring each plate looked inviting before it reached the table. This kind of attention to detail demonstrates a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of Southern culinary traditions.

Customer reviews often highlight the friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices, making it an ideal destination for family gatherings or casual outings. According to multiple sources, including Yelp and TripAdvisor, diners consistently rate Maxine’s between four and five stars for both service and food quality. The combination of traditional recipes, attentive service, and a welcoming environment gives it an authoritative presence in Jackson’s restaurant landscape.

If you’re navigating Jackson and looking for a spot that embodies Southern charm, Maxine’s Old Country Kitchen is difficult to beat. Its ability to seamlessly combine authentic recipes, a cozy dining experience, and top-notch service reflects a genuine mastery of the diner concept. Whether you’re in for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner, you’ll leave with the impression that every meal was crafted with thoughtfulness, skill, and a love for good food.

  • Maxine’s is full of flavor. Soul food with soul and plenty of it. Tucked away in the backyard on a dead end residential street it feels like you’re eating in Maxine’s dining room just off the kitchen. The traditional meat and 2 sides, with plenty of variety. Fried and baked chicken, hamburger steak, chicken tetrazzini, among other leads that change just a little depending on the day. A long line of vegetables and sides. Green beans, field peas, green peas, Mac and cheese, greens, corn, squash and more. Today we had the baked chicken. Seasoned well and cooked to pull-apart, fork tender. The green peas had a touch of spice and little potatoes in there too. The corn on the cob was Cajun spiced. And the cornbread muffin was perfect. Not too sweet, not too plain. The fried chicken was phenomenal. A leg and a thigh, crispy fried, crunchy and plenty of seasoning in the breading. This was crunch-tastic! The Mac and cheese was rightly seasoned, had the browned cheese on top and super creamy cheese underneath. This was good. Standard rice and gravy and the they-made it soft roll from the package. Dessert was a star. A warm cinnamon roll, super delicious icing and the center was that warm, gooey goodness that makes cinnamon rolls worth it!! Peach cobbler was good too. Mix a bite of both and you just invented peach cobbler cinnamon heaven! Grab a bottled Coke or tea/lemonade or koolaid from the serving table. The procedure is line up to pick your plate and dishes, then back in line to pay, pick a table and enjoy! It’s busy during the lunch hour and after the first bite you’ll understand why!

  • Great atmosphere with a great customer service. Love the old school music that's always playing too. On to the food.... You can tell someone's Mom or Grandmom is the kitchen cooking. Love their smoked wings and homemade veggies. Can't forget the desserts. Come on down enjoy a great home style plate from chicken, liver, tetrazanni, smothered steaks etc you won't regret it.

  • I went on a Tuesday, and got the hamburger steak, Mac and cheese, and lima beans. The food was AMAZINGGGGGGGGG. Well seasoned and the lady that took my order was sweet and helpful. 10/10 will be a regular lunch spot for me since I'm in school near there.

  • This place is fantastic...off at the end of a dead end street in a nice neighborhood. Surprised but knew it would be good when we saw the line out the door and parking full. It didn't disappoint. The food was spot on.
